Solar Energy Overview
Vivint Solar Overview
Investing in solar is a smart decision. But it's also a big decision. That's why we want to help you fully understand how it works and how it will affect you, your home, and the environment.
Why Solar?
Solar is a great alternative to traditional electricity providers. From providing lower costs and producing more environmentally friendly energy, solar is a smart decision.
Save money every month
With solar, you can save 20–30% on your utility bill every month. That adds up to thousands of dollars over the life of your agreement.
Protect the environment
Did you know that the average American home emits more than 16,000 pounds of CO2 annually? It would take 24 trees to offset that production. But, if only 5% of Americans used solar energy, it would:
- Be like taking 7,700,000 cars off the road
- Remove 89,600,000 pounds of CO2 out of the environment
- Retire 6,900,000 trees from their CO2 offsetting jobs
Why Vivint Solar?
No large, up-front investment
With Vivint Solar, we use a power purchase agreement (PPA). A PPA lets you avoid a large, up-front investment. Instead of having to finance your system and recoup the investment over 10 to 20 years, we agree to design, install, and maintain your system. You agree to buy the power the system produces, but at a lower rate than you would pay your utility. Using this method, you can start enjoying the savings solar provides your first month.
Professionally trained installers
Each of our installers completes a rigorous training course, which includes both hands-on and classroom training. They become experts in what solar is, how it can benefit you, and how it works.
End-to-end service
Unlike other solar providers, we manage the entire process in-house to ensure that you have a complete and positive experience.

Solar Equipment
Your solar power system is comprised of four main pieces of equipment: the panels, the microinverters, wiring, and a net meter. Mouseover the home below to find out what each piece does and how it works.
The Installation Process
To ensure the best possible experience, we walk you through the process of having your system installed step by step. From the initial assessment to obtaining permits and completing the installation, we do everything we can to make solar easy.
The transition to solar energy is simple. Power generated by your solar array will function just like any other electricity in your home meaning you won't have to change your home or appliances in any way.
1. Your Home
A residential solar energy system can be installed on almost any type of roof. The best roofs for solar installations are composite, not too steep, easy to access, and have unobstructed space for the solar panels. Roofs that face south or southwest and are not shaded will produce the most energy.
If you're worried about your homeowners association, you'll be happy to know that most states don't allow HOAs to stop you from installing solar panels. They may ask you to change the design or location for aesthetic reason as long as the changes don't significantly decrease your energy production. Most homeowner's insurance policies are sufficient to cover electric utility requirements, but your utility company may ask you to sign an interconnection agreement.

2. Installation
Our goal is to get your system up and running as quickly as possible. The length of installation depends on the complexity of your roof, but the average home installation takes about one day.
3. Maintenance

Solar photovoltaic panels require little maintenance. There is no need to wash or dust photovoltaic panels, but it is important to keep them clear of shade and debris. Anything above and beyond this is covered by your full service agreement. Your full service agreement includes repair and maintenance for the life of your agreement. Minimal shade and occasional cleaning and inspection are the most important parts of your system's maintenance.
The Vivint Solar service team monitors your system output to ensure it is performing properly and will help you if it's not. Should your roof ever need repairs, the solar panels can be removed and reinstalled for a reasonable fee.
4. Tied to the Grid
There are many benefits to having a solar energy system that is tied to the grid. First, it eliminates the need for an expensive battery back-up system. Second, you are guaranteed that you will always have access to a power source.
When your solar panels aren't producing enough energy, you automatically draw energy from your utility company instead, making the transition safe and seamless. This type of system also eliminates confusion about over-production. Most states have net metering policies that allow you to use your excess energy as "roll-over credit," but very few utility companies will pay you if you generate more electricity than you use.
With Vivint Solar you won't have to worry about over-production. Because we own and maintain the solar system for you, you simply pay us for the electricity it generates.
Since your home will seamlessly switch over to your traditional energy provider when your panels aren't producing enough electricity, you will receive two smaller bills at the end of each month: one from us and one from the utility.
5. Weather

Did you know it doesn't have to be completely sunny for your system to produce energy? Even in fog or on a cloudy day, your system will produce 25 to 30 percent of what it would on a sunny day.
You also don't need to worry about your system being unproductive in the winter. Although solar panels won't produce power when covered with snow, the snow on the panels should melt quickly because they are installed where your house receives the most sun. Solar panels are also designed to withstand lightning and hail (up to .75 inches traveling at 120 miles per hour).
In the event of a black out, your system is designed to turn off automatically as a safety precaution so utility company technicians can repair electrical lines safely.
