5 ways to become a home organization pro

3 min read

Imagine you have company over and have to grab something out of the pantry. As you walk toward the pantry, thoughts rush through your head, “Am I ready to be judged by the messiness of my pantry? Will a bunch of items come tumbling down as soon as I open the door?” Of course not, you’re not careless. You’re a perfectly responsible adult who has their life together, right?

We all know the feeling–organizing your home can seem like an overwhelming task and often becomes apparent when you need it most. What do you need? How long will it take? And where do you even start? Whether it’s for the next time the in-laws come over for dinner, or just for your own sanity and peace of mind, here are some pointers to help you become a home organization pro in no time.

1. Start with one space

Organizing your home can seem like an overwhelming task. Start with one space and finish organizing it before moving on to the next one. A couple of things to consider are: Do you start with the most visible space? Or the space that is giving you the biggest headache? Do you start with the biggest project like the garage, or start small with the linen closet? There is no wrong answer here. Whatever you choose, finishing one space before you start another will save you stress and will prevent your entire house from being cluttered with six overhaul projects all happening at once.

2. Plan your time

Things don’t organize themselves over night. Cleaning out your garage or organizing your pantry will likely take more time than a small linen closet. Depending on the area you choose to tackle, set aside a few hours each day to get things done. Setting the right time expectations will help things move smoothly and cause less anxiety for you and the family during the process.

3. Say goodbye

There’s never a right time to say goodbye–unless you’re talking about those old pairs of shoes that have been cluttering the corner of your closet for the last decade. One inevitable part of organizing your home is finding things to get rid of. If you haven’t used it in two years, it’s time to say goodbye. Not everything is trash though! Consider donating items that are still in good condition, listing your items for sale online, or hosting a yard sale over the weekend.

4. Divide spaces

Adding additional shelves or stacking labeled plastic containers can really help maximize vertical space. Not very handy? Consider using portable stackable shelves rather than installing additional shelving yourself. The more compartments you have, the easier it’ll be to organize items.

5. Accessibility

When organizing items, it’s a good idea to keep frequently used items more accessible than the things you only use once or twice a year. Use those higher shelves that no one can reach without a ladder for things you don’t use often and keep those everyday things front and center in a place that’s easy to access.

A clean and organized home will save you time and help you feel better about yourself when company compliments you on the tidiness of your pantry.
