Electricity cost calculator - How much energy do I use?

An important part of taking better control of your energy use is to monitor it. But you may be wondering exactly how much power you’re using. Your heating, cooling, lighting system and general appliances through your home require electricity. With that many things needing power, it can be hard to know exactly where to start when trying to lower your bill. Getting an overall view of your energy use is the first step, but pinpointing where you can do better is even a lot more difficult. There are a few simple ways you can do this.

Check your energy bill

The easiest way to get an idea of how much energy you are using is to check your energy bill. It should at the very least have a clear indication of the amount for which you are being charged, which should correlate to a specific amount of kilowatts used. But if you want something a little more detailed, you’re going to have to use alternate methods.

Get smart devices

Smart appliances offer a lot of benefits, mostly with energy preservation. Energy Star refrigerators and washers can significantly cut down on energy use, but some can give you insight into how much energy you are using. If you are looking for a way to pinpoint exactly what is having the greatest impact on your energy bill, smart devices are probably the best way to go.

Ask your local utility for an audit

Some utilities provide an energy audit for their customers, completely free of charge. Call your utility and see what they are willing to offer. They may send a professional to inspect the overall energy efficiency of your home, as well as figure out where you can improve. This is a free (and really easy) way to figure out exactly how you can start saving money in a relatively short amount of time.

Because almost everything requires energy, it can be daunting to try and break our usage down into its smaller parts. But doing so may be worth the effort, and the money you can save with a stronger knowledge of your own energy use can definitely pay for itself in the years to come, both financially and with the improved health of the planet.
