Can I take my solar panels with me when moving to a new home?

Maybe. It’s possible to move your Vivint Solar system to a new location, but it depends on a couple of key factors:

  • Are you moving to a new area? Except for rare cases, if you want to move your solar panels to a new house, it has to be within the same state and utility company. If you’re moving to a different state, or simply far enough away to sign-up with a separate utility company, Contact Us. We can help determine whether your new home is compatible with your existing system. If it’s not, we’ll look into other options for you.

  • Is your roof compatible? The roof on your new home must also be large enough to fit all of the previous solar panels that you’re bringing over. For example, if you currently have twenty solar panels on your roof and the new home will only fit sixteen, then we’ll be unable to transfer your existing solar energy system to your new home. If you’re unsure whether or not the roof on your new home is big enough to support the current system, call or email us. We’ll help you figure that out and may even be able to look into other options for you.

How much does it cost to remove and reinstall a solar energy system?

The process of removing, relocating, and reinstalling a solar energy system can take a lot of work, so there are some fees involved. These costs can average anywhere from between $4,000 to $8,000, depending on the size of the system.

How long does it take to remove solar panels and reinstall them?

If everything goes according to plan, a full relocation can take an average of 3-4 months. That’s because relocating a solar energy system includes signing new paperwork, scheduling the relocation, getting the system permitted, and a lot of other factors based on your area. If you’re selling your home, be sure to reach out to us at least 30-days before your home closes, so we have enough time to prepare your paperwork. What if I want to add more panels to my solar system?

We will be happy to look into adding more solar panels to your roof, but it will operate as an entirely independent solar panel system. You will have two solar panel systems on your roof and you would be billed separately for each one. If you’re interested, be sure to mention while speaking with one of our agents on the phone.
